The Rooter Club, Football Spirit Section

In 1920, the Rooter Club was formed to support the football team in Memorial Stadium. Each year, the captain of the cheerleading squad was elected as the Rooter King, and he led the students in card tricks, cheers, and school songs. The Rooter Club was most popular from the 1920s-1970s, losing its ground with the move to the Metrodome. During the 28 seasons that Minnesota football was played at the Metrodome, The Rooter Club diminished and as a
result, the student section has been less united. It’s time to bring the spirit and tradition back to campus with our new on-campus football stadium. We are re-introducing the community to The Rooter Club, a 100 member group who will lead and coordinate the cheers and chants for the student section. Rooter Club members will get a maroon shirt to gain admission to the front row seats of section 126. They will work with the band and spirit squad to keep the student section going and to make TCF Bank Stadium one of the best football stadiums in the country. The Ice Box, Men's Hockey Spirit Section

As the “State of Hockey” Minnesota prides itself on having competitive hockey teams across all ages year after year. The Golden Gopher Hockey Team has long lived up to that reputation as a signature athletic program at the University of Minnesota. Mariucci Arena continues to amaze fans and players alike as they witness the intense atmosphere generated by Gopher Hockey. Featuring an Olympic-sized ice sheet, the free-wheeling style of play of Minnesota’s “Pride on Ice” left opponents struggling to keep up with the Gophers in Mariucci Arena. The Ice Box Board will lead the student section in creating this intimidating atmosphere within Mariucci Arena to give the Gophers true home ice advantage. If you are interested in leading cheers and establishing new traditions at Gopher Hockey games check out the application below to become a member of The Ice Box board:

The Barnyard, Men's Basketball Spirit Section

Williams Arena, or as it’s more commonly known “The Barn”, is one of the most unique basketball arenas in the nation; with its pitched roof and raised floor, the arena has the look and feel of a barn and students adopted the nickname early on. Built in 1927, “The Barn” was originally known as the University of Minnesota Field House, but after a 1950 remodel, the facility was renamed in honor of former U of M football coach Dr. Henry L. Williams (1900-1921). Passionate student fans have always made “The Barn” one of the most exciting arenas in college basketball, but since its inception, The Barnyard has made an even larger impact on Golden Gopher Basketball. This spirit section is made up of dedicated volunteers who work to make “The Barn” one of the toughest places to play in the nation. The Barnyard students, usually recognized for their over-the-top costumes, including many barn animals, have a true passion for Gopher Basketball. If you are interested in being a part of this group, check out the application below.

School Songs

Minnesota Rouser (MP3 794K)
In 1909, the Star Tribune started a contest to create a school fight song for the University. Floyd M. Hutsell won and now 100 years later, we still sing The Minnesota Rouser.
Minnesota, hats off to thee!
To thy colors true we shall ever be.
Firm and strong, united are we.
Rah! Rah! Rah! For Ski-U-Mah.
Rah! Rah! Rah! Rah!
Rah for the U of M.
M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A
MINNESOTA. MINNESOTA. YAYYY GOPHERS!

Hail Minnesota (Alma Mater) (MP3 1,179K)
Minnesota hail to thee!
Hail to thee our college dear!
Thy light shall ever be.
A beacon bright and clear
Thy sons and daughters true.
Will proclaim thee near and far.
They will guard thy fame.
And adore thy name;
Thou shalt be their Northern Star.

Our Minnesota (MP3 957K)
On you Gophers! You fighting Gophers!
Break that line, and win this game!
Fight it through men, win the Big Ten,
Make them sorry that they came!
For the glory of Minnesota!
For the honor that's her due!
For maroon and gold, be warriors bold!
For dear old "U".
