The Barnyard, Men's Basketball Spirit Section

Barnyard 1

Williams Arena, or as it’s more commonly known “The Barn”, is one of the most unique basketball arenas in the nation; with its pitched roof and raised floor, the arena has the look and feel of a barn and students adopted the nickname early on. Built in 1927, “The Barn” was originally known as the University of Minnesota Field House, but after a 1950 remodel, the facility was renamed in honor of former U of M football coach Dr. Henry L. Williams (1900-1921). Passionate student fans have always made “The Barn” one of the most exciting arenas in college basketball, but since its inception, The Barnyard has made an even larger impact on Golden Gopher Basketball. This spirit section is made up of dedicated volunteers, the Barnyard Board, who work to make “The Barn” one of the toughest places to play in the nation. The Barnyard students, usually recognized for their over-the-top costumes, especially farm animals, have a true passion for Gopher Basketball. To be a member of the Barnyard, you must simply have student season tickets for men’s basketball. To join the Barnyard email list (called the “Barnyard Core”) which gets priority for events and is the first to hear about Barnyard news, email sportsmanship@umn.edu with your name, student ID number, and year in school.
